Birmingham vs Liverpool preview and tips

This clash features Birmingham and Liverpool teams occupying positions in the Premier League neither would have predicted at the start of the season.

Joe Hart

A busy day for Hart?

In ninth place Birmingham have reason to be pleasantly surprised with their success, having been strong relegation bets at the start of the season. Liverpool, meanwhile, will wonder where it all went wrong.

A two-one defeat at Benfica in the Europa League on Thursday evening aside, Liverpool have enjoyed a mini-run of form lately and impressed in a strong display against Sunderland last weekend.

Birmingham can draw confidence from their excellent home form, having been unbeaten in their last 12 league encounters at St Andrews. With seven wins, seven draws and only two defeats at home this season, the Blues have the same record as Top Four contenders and arch rivals Aston Villa.

But Birmingham haven’t won at home in four games and have managed just a single clean sheet in 2010. Liverpool haven’t fared much better recently with no wins in six league away games.

But with Torres in superior form – three league games, five league goals – Liverpool have an ace up their sleeve that is not reciprocated in their opponents’ ranks. With Gerrard threatening a return to form any minute, the Blues will struggle to shut them out.
