Chelsea vs Wigan: Nervy Londoners to hold out

Ten months and 38 games of football are about to culminate in a straight shoot-out for Premier League glory. Chelsea are in the driving seat and despite Wigan’s protests we think the Londoners will walk over their opponents on Sunday.

Beware any team that talks big before a tie with Chelsea. When Stoke players were quoted in the press as ‘relishing the prospect’ of helping to decide the Premier League title race, little did they know their ‘role’ would involve a 7-0 mauling.

Now Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has said something similar – even warning Chelsea not to be complacent, could pride once more come before a big fall? Seven goal hauls don’t come round very often, but Chelsea have three this season. Just a thought…

More likely, however, is a convincing victory tempered by Chelsea’s nerves. The Blues should win this game at a canter, but with one eye on the silverware you would forgive them for stuttering slightly.

And don’t be swayed by Wigan’s impressive 3-1 victory in the reverse fixture in September last year. Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti was just getting started then, now he’s part of the furniture.

The stats speak for themselves. Wigan have won only three times away from home all season, while Chelsea have the best home record in the league with 16 wins and just one loss (a surreal 4-2 loss to Man City).

We think a three-goal margin is possible and three-nil is 7.0 on Bet365. More conservative bets to ponder include a Chelsea clean sheet or to win both halves (see best bets above).

Best bet: Two or three goals @2.1 on Bet365
