England kick off their must win (or should that be ‘must thrash’) game against Algeria at 7.30pm on Friday. Needing a big goal difference to top group, we expect, nay demand lots of goals.

England in South Africa

Only a win will do

England have had time to come to terms with their shock draw against the USA as well as criticism from a range of experts about their tentative style of play. Only a win – and a handsome win at that – will appease our frustrated fans.

Algeria are bottom of the group having lost one-nil to Slovenia (who top the group) and Betfair has them at a modest 1,000-to-one to win the World Cup; one of only five teams to have that dubious honour.

So it should be a walk in the park right? Not necessarily; nerves don’t suit England and their recent form against ‘lesser’ opposition of Japan, Mexico and the USA has been unimpressive, even though they managed two wins and a draw.

Bet365 gives odds of an England win at 1.25. In other words it’s a fairly sure result, but not a certainty. If patriotism means nothing to you the opposite result is set at 12…don’t even think about it.

In their last eight games, the North African side have mustered just a single win, against the United Arab Emirates, and were spanked 4-0 by the might of Egypt. Ireland also beat them 3-0.

Once again, England will be looking to Wayne Rooney to supply the goals, and though he failed to net in England’s last six encounters he remains 5-to-2 to punish Algeria on Friday on Boylesports. Gerrard is 4-to-one while Lampard is well priced at 5-to-one.

Best bet: Over 2.5 goals @2.0 on Bet35
