Liverpool vs Lille preview and tips

Liverpool head into the second leg of their last 16 Europa League tie with Lille one goal down on aggregate but buoyed by an impressive display against Portsmouth in their domestic league.

Pool to overturn Lille?

For a change Rafa Benitez has a near-fully fit squad to pick from on Thursday and crucially Gerrard and star man Torres – who practically single-handedly swept aside Pompey on Sunday – are both available for tonight’s game.

Meanwhile Liverpool’s French opponents can allow themselves some confidence with their single goal advantage and the fact that they have won 10 of their last 14 games in Ligue 1, suffering just two defeats.

But the Merseysiders have a history of overturning deficits against French opposition and the Anfield faithful are among the most demanding fans in the world. Nothing less than a win this evening will do.

As the last chance for Liverpool to grab some silverware this season, team members know what this game means to the club.

“The Lille game is massive for us,” said keeper Pepe Reina, “because it is the last option we have this season to win a trophy, and the most important thing for everyone at this club and for the fans is that we try to win a trophy.

“We have the Manchester United game coming, which is always massive for the fans, but first things first, we have to deal with the Lille game and ensure we are still going for a trophy after it.”
