Liverpool vs Portsmouth preview

Arguably the two least happy teams in the Premier League will do battle at Anfield on Monday, with Liverpool easy favourites despite losing two away games on the bounce against Lille and Wigan.

Fernando Torres

Torres to add to tally?

The Reds are out of all but one competition this season, and are a goal down entering the second leg of the Europa League’s current round. It’s not where Rafa Benitez had hoped they would be at the start of the current campaign.

However Portsmouth’s woes are well documented and with relegation a certainty, especially if they have nine points knocked off for going into administration, Pompey have only pride to play for in the Premier League.

But the form book doesn’t read well for the blue half of tonight’s clash. They have won only two games in the road all season, while Liverpool have the league’s fourth best home record with 10 wins.

On their side is Avram Grant’s impressive track record against Liverpool with three wins and two draws in his five meetings with the Reds.

Yossi Benayoun is a possible to make tonight’s game having been kept out of recent fixtures with an ankle injury. But Fabio Aurelio and Martin Skrtel are still out with long-term injuries.

Despite Liverpool’s total lack of spark this season, Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard remain a significant threat, with the former player scoring 17 goals in his last 21 league starts.

Best bet: Torres to score @1.8
