With the World Cup just moments away and (touch wood) all the training injuries out of the way, now’s the time to start thinking about betting on the tournament. We take a look at where you can win big.

World champs Italy

The obvious place to start is the tournament favourites Spain. They’ve never won the World Cup but with a team that is packed with class and awesome firepower upfront, they’re well worth a look even with relatively short odds of 5.1 on Betfair.

Then there’s always Brazil, who must be getting bored of winning the tournament by now, and who’s ferocious goal-scoring capabilities have earned them odds of 5.5 on Sporting Bet.

Then there the outsiders who nevertheless enjoy World Cup vintage. France, Italy and Germany all have good prices which you bet on then lay on Betfair when you think their time is up. And while Holland have never come first odds of 11 on Betfair feels about right given their quality (they were a lot longer but have come in).

But why wait for the glow of winning. Some of the best bets are reserved for which teams will qualify and even for those that will arrive home ahead of the postcards. Vote for Portugal to go out in their group which also features the Ivory Coast and Brazil and you could enjoy the dual happiness of a cash win and revenge on Ronaldo.

The bookies agree and have rated the likelihood of it happening accordingly. Boyle Sports will give you 2.1 ahead of the start of Portugal’s campaign on Saturday.

For the less revenge driven among you, France is a good bet to win its group at 2.0 on Boyle Sports, while Betfair will give you 5.4 that Group of Death group G will produce the most goals.

Meanwhile, for those of you who like your bets curious, Betfair will also give you 9.2 on English referee Howard Webb taking stewardship of the final.

Lastly there’s plenty of fun to be had backing England. Bet365 is offering a great money back offer, which kicks in if your team is eliminated on penalties. It goes without saying that England have suffered this fate more than any other World Team.

Since 1990 we’ve been eliminated three times on pens in just four chances (England didn’t qualify in 1994). The only other time featured Ronaldinho’s freak cross-cum-shot goal, while in ’86 we were slapped by the ‘Hand of God’.

Incidentally, Bet365 is also offering a ‘bore draw’ clause and will refund your money on bets where the game ends 0-0. A host of markets are included, such as goal scorer, score line and full time/half time.

Heard enough? Then visit our offers page for some great free bets!
