Wolfsburg v Fulham preview and tips

With a mid-table finish in the Premier League safely in the bag, Fulham have turned their attention squarely to Europa League glory, which a win or draw against opponents Wolfsburg will put them one step closer to achieving.

The Cottagers are arguably in a stronger position than fellow English Europa League hopefuls Liverpool, who trail 2-1 on aggregate heading into their second leg on Thursday evening.

Fulham managed an impressive 2-1 win at home against the German side last week and will be looking for a repeat performance to finish the job. While their form in the Premiership has drooped of late they could be forgiven for diverting attention to this competition.

A last-minute goal in the first leg kept Wolfsburg hopes alight, however, and Fulham’s dodgy track record away from home could make all the difference in the repeat tie. Will they play for a draw?

Their last away win was nine attempts ago: away at Accrington Stanley (who are they?) in the FA Cup. But of just three traveling wins this season, two have been against European opposition Basle and Vetra, with the other coming against lowly Portsmouth.

Roy Hodgson has Bobby Zamora, an in-form Zoltan Gera and journeyman Damien Duff fit and ready for action. It’s widely acknowledged that Hodgson performed miracles with Fulham this season – a win tonight would be the cherry on the cake.

Zamora will be central to his team’s chances. It is his goal-scoring form in the Europa League (five goals from six appearances) which has kept them in the competition.

Form-wise neither team sparkles. Fulham lost their only other away game to German opposition in Europe, while Wolfsberg have triumphed only once in four attempts against English sides.
